Shoegaze is one of my absolute favorite genres, but I've not done research into it until recently. At least, not the kind of research I did for this post! Originally, the name was an insult, as critics felt the bands who embodied the genre were not very entertaining. It comes from their stage presence, where all the band members stand almost completely still and look down at their effects pedals while they focus and play. The artists associated with this genre embraced the name, and many other bands and variants of the style came to fruition.
This week is an introduction to that style, from traditional to modern Shoegaze, which is called Nu-gaze. I wrote a paper that delves into the history, the influences, the characteristics and the modern adaptations of Shoegaze, but you by no means need to read it. I'll be including it at the end If you are curious about any of those things however, so maybe give it a skim!
